European Obesity Day

Dear EOD supporters,

We are writing to thank you for all your support over recent months and efforts to ensure that the EOD message and the 2010 ‘5-10 for a healthier Europe’ campaign reached the largest possible audience. The real added value of EOD is in bringing together patient groups, health organisations and policy makers from across Europe as part of a truly pan-European initiative.

EOD has come a very long way over the last year and to build up the support we have in Brussels and to have run high-profile events in 16 Member States this year is phenomenal. The first ever EOD enjoyed enormous press coverage across Europe, ensuring our initiative reaches a huge number of citizens. Clippings will be made available on the EOD website www.obesityday.eu along with photos, posters and summaries of the events in each country across Europe.

EOD also held a press conference and roundtable ‘Tackling overweight and obesity – the difference 5-10 can make’ in the European Parliament in Strasbourg on 19 May, hosted by Cristian Buşoi MEP. The roundtable brought together our supporters, many of whom are among Europe’s leading experts on the topic. We were joined by a number of MEPs and John Dalli, EU Commissioner for Health and Consumer Affairs, who welcomed the EOD initiative and all our hard work.

Our short-term focus will be to ensure that enough MEPs sign written declaration number 0034 before 9 September so that it will be adopted as a Resolution on the Parliament and forwarded to national parliaments and governments.

Over the coming months we will take steps to ensure that EOD becomes a genuine pan-European forum for discussion and that EOD 2011 will reach even more citizens.

With our thanks and very best wishes,

Dr. David Haslam
